British Prime Minister David Cameron has met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in London, in the hope of accelerating the Middle East peace process.
In a diplomatic gesture by the UK, the status of the travelling entourage was upgraded from a delegation to a mission.
It was a gesture acknowledged by the Palestinian leader who also thanked Britain for its support in the United Nations.
David Cameron, British Prime Minister, said, “This is a moment, not to push back on the talks between Israel and Palestine but to actually make more progress to push forward. This is a moment when we should be trying to seize the opportunity and recognise that this lies at the heart of so many issues in your region. And we very strongly support those talks going ahead and we also supported the UN Security Council resolution and we are proud to do that.”
Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian President, said, “Of course also we are very grateful for your stance in the Security Council. And also for the trilateral communiqué which has been released by Britain, France and Germany, we think that that communiqué is a good basis for a negotiation, for a parameter for a negotiations, we hope. We hope that we will continue our efforts to pursue talks and to achieve peace settlement with the Israelis as soon as possible.”
