Wu Weidong, a social woker of Hong Kong Community, caused more concern for organizing street sleepers into soccer team to participating in World Cup.
The Community organization, Wu served was called “pressure group” because of its special service to the homeless and prisoners.
The project, named “Sunlight Action” and launched 2005, has been the only government-funded project in Hong Kong Community, focusing on helping street sleepers and ex-offenders rebuild confidence and live a new life. Now, the community has successfully organized sixth time to participate World Cup with street sleepers.
Wu said that social worker is different from volunteers and Residents Committee. Social worker in Hong Kong is profession and need to go through a strict qualification, just as lawyer, accountant and teacher. In Hong Kong, one of 443 people is a social worker. This number is far more than developed country.
Such pressure group has a safe valve signification in the social system. However, its work is hard to do, base on limited resource.
Social work need a great of patience, but the wages of workers are very slow. Wu’s starting salary is 9,000 HK$, the same level to street cleaners.
Wu’s colleague evaluates him that he is a little stubborn and it’s the cause he can stick to do social work.
Wu said that” I hope all citizens could travel so that the whole city can develop further.”
