Number of vehicles in Macao exceeds 200,000

MACAO – Macao’s licensed motor vehicle numbers reached 200,169 by the end of June, a year-on-year increase of four percent, the Macao Post Daily reported on Monday.

The newspaper quoted the latest figures by the city’s Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) as saying that the number of motor vehicles stood at 6,785 per square kilometers at the end of June, based on Macao’s land area of just 29.5 square kilometers.

It was the first time that the city’s number of licensed motor vehicles exceeded the 200,000 threshold, in which 108,178 were motorcycles and 78,301 were light private cars, the figures said.

The number of new registrations of motor vehicles increased 11 percent year-on-year to 8,392 in the first half of this year, with motorcycles and light private cars accounting for 56 percent and 40 percent respectively, according to the DSEC figures.

The figures also indicated that the number of traffic accidents in the first six months rose seven percent year-on-year to 6,879, resulting in 2,684 casualties, four of whom were killed.
