Iran sends 2 warships to Mediterranean

Iran’s navy chief says Iran has no hostile intentions by sending two warships to the Mediterranean for the first time in more than three decades.

Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says the voyage is meant to build up Iran’s defense capabilities. He adds that the visit was not connected to the current turmoil in the Arab world. But he refused to say how long the ships would remain in the Mediterranean.

The ships arrived at Syria’s Latakia seaport last week after sailing through the Suez Canal. Iran says the trip is for a training mission but Israel views it as provocative.
