Egypt want South Africa clash postponed

Egypt want next month’s crucial 2012 Africa Cup of Nations clash with South Africa rescheduled because of the recent upheaval in their country.

The African champions will write to the Caf this week to plead for the 26 March away game to be postponed.

The country’s league has been halted because of the uprising which led to president Hosni Mubarak’s resignation.

With many players in the Pharaohs squad playing in the local league, officials say their form has been affected.

Egypt were defeated 1-0 by lowly Niger

“The team must have suffered a dip in form after the league was halted, so we want to put off the game with South Africa,” Egypt assistant coach Hamada Sedki said.

“We will send a letter to CAF on Wednesday. We will ask them to play the game in June should they accept our request.”

The Pharaohs are in danger of not qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations to defend their title for at the tournament in be held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Egypt are bottom of Group G with one point after two matches in the qualifiers.

They were held 1-1 at home by Sierra Leone before lowly Niger stunned the title holders in the second group game in October last year.

Egypt must get a result from the game against South Africa to improve their chances of qualifying for the tournament.
