A New, Long, and Global Journey Has Taken Place from AntiCNN.com to the April/4th Media!
In 2008, it was a very small beginning which then not many people paid attention to. However, within two years, it became a huge number of peoples’ interests both domestically and worldwide. It was due to many million peoples’ visits to this small but heroic adventure, called www.antiCNN.com. This brave first step was made by a young Chinese man, Rao Jin when he just graduated from Tsinghua University in Beijing.
Even if this webmedia began with Chinese language only in 2008, a record number of clicks and visits from around the globe grew up to more then 100 million by 2010. However, these numbers mostly came from his Chinese compatriots, understandingly mainly due to its language choice. His successful adventure but realization of language issue as a limit to future growth pushed him to further envision with a much larger challenge to create a English webmedia.
That’s how a brand new global media, called the 4th Media or April Media came about and why this new baby is thrown into the sea of global media outlets.
Last July, Mr. Rao came to Tsinghua and sought for help from the School of Journalism and Communication where I am a Visiting Professor. It was when I was called in to help his new vision. So, last September, believing in our global human networks, friendships, acquaintances, and all sorts of worldwide encounters, I, together with my 5 Tsinghua (School of Journalism and Communication) international graduate students from 4 different continents, joined Mr. Rao and his Chinese compatriots to begin this new, meaningful and collective journey.
However, with determined commitments by the leadership on the 4th Media, together with 1) a humble but appropriate manpower, meaning, a team of committed people from both China and around the world, i.e., those 5 international student reporters (part-time) in the beginning, 2) the 4th Media’s sociopolitical and global perspectives and editorial politics, and 3) warm supports from around the globe, mainly through a global networking of our friendships around the world, we believe this brand new global media seemed to have made so far a very much successful start.

The Fourth (April) Media Mission Statement
The 4th Media, English Website of the April Media Group, is a holistic new global voice from the East, the West, the North and the South. It stands for the following sociopolitical and cultural principles:
- The independent rights to self-determination and self-reliance of every sovereign nation from their present internationally-recognized national boundaries;
- The universal principle of non-interference in domestic affairs of a sovereign nation’;
- The principles of mutual-respect, cooperation, peaceful-coexistence, and a co-prosperity among nations;
- The principle of peaceful resolution of all sorts of disputes and controversial issues between/among nations and regions such as a territorial (land, sea and space) disputes through dialogues and negotiations;
- The principal respect for cultural diversity and religious plurality;
- The individual sociopolitical, cultural and religious rights of every human being who is, however, in respectful harmony with socially-collective and communal goals, principles, rules and values for the sake of everybody’s wellbeing and happiness;
- The nature-friendly, environmentally-conscious, ecologically-protective renewable green (e.g., solar, water, wind and so on) energy policies and industries through globally-coordinated national, regional and continental efforts and consortiums.
The 4th Media, English Website of the April Media Group opposes:
- Any sort of racism, sexism, classism and militarism;
- Any sort of illegal wars, military confrontations, military interventions, and military invasions;
- Any sort of willful fabrication, falsification and demonization of sovereign nations against their sociopolitical leaderships, domestic policies, sociopolitical ideologies, and governmental systems;
- Any sort of colonization of peoples, lands, and resources;
- Any sort of human enslavements such as global trafficking of sex slave, children, slave trade, child labor, and slave labor;
- Any sort of colonialism, imperialism, and hegemonism;
- Any sort of chauvinistic and/or irrational nationalism.
Therefore, the 4th Media has a dream that someday in near future it can become a respectful new global voice in order to play a new role to make life, work and the world better, livable, and sustainable by bringing, pursuing, and seeking for the following goals, hopes, and wishes:
- Act as a watchdog to expose willful fabrications, falsifications, and demonization that are rampant in the world of present global media outlets;
- Provide news and analysis from a multipolar perspectives;
- Encourage debate and discussion on international topics;
- Bring constructive, healthy and peaceful messages rather than destructive, unhealthy and war-mongering messages that have been flooded/bombarded by mainstream corporate media outlets;
- Monitor the use and abuse of power in the international arena, especially in international institutions for which there may not be no other form of oversight functioning;
- Seek for empowerments, renewals, and visions in those disappointed, disheartened, and disillusioned by the mainstream global media as a whole.
The 4th Media shall be much different from the 1st Media (Capitalist corporate mainstream media in general such as in the US, the West and the likes), the 2nd Media (Socialist state government media), but close to what the 3rd Media (Grassroots, independent, and progressive) does. However, while the 3rd Media mainly comes from the West, the 4th Media comes from the East, the West, the North, and the South.
