China again urges political solution to Libyan crisis

China on Tuesday urged the parties of Libya to start substantive dialogue and seek a political solution to the crisis, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular briefing on Tuesday.

China again urges political solution to Libyan crisis

Hong’s comments came days after the African Union (AU) passed a new road map on resolving the Libyan crisis at the 17th Ordinary Session of the AU summit last week.

The AU said it shall not cooperate in the execution of the arrest warrants of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi saying that the warrants risk destroying efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in the country that has now sucked in international actors such as NATO forces.

“China appreciates and supports the AU’s efforts to push a political solution to the Libyan crisis, and we expect Libyan parties to take into account the fundamental interests of the country and people and give serious attention to the related reconciliation proposal,” Hong said.

Hong said China maintains that military means do not solve problems but only complicate them, adding that the Libyan parties should take a rational attitude toward the current situation.
