The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has called on the United Nations Security Council to stop Israel from violating international law in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mohammad Khazaei, read out the NAM statement on the latest developments in the occupied territories during a UN Security Council meeting on Monday.
Khazaei said NAM is deeply concerned about the situation in the West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip.
“[NAM’s] concerns include the escalation of violence, terrorism, racism, the destruction of houses, attacks on towns and villages throughout the occupied West Bank, excavation operations at Al-Aqsa Mosque, raids on mosques, and attacks on Palestinian worshippers in East al-Quds (Jerusalem),” part of the statement read.
“NAM also expresses its deep concerns over the continuation of settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly around East al-Quds, and considers it a violation of international law,” Khazaei stated, and called on “the international community, including the Security Council, to act to stop the illegal actions by the Israeli regime.”
Khazaei, who was representing NAM member states, added that NAM has pledged to support the legitimate demands of the Palestinian people, including the Palestinian request for membership in the UN.
For several years, the Palestinians have been campaigning to achieve UN recognition as a sovereign state based on the pre-1967 borders.
NAM is an international organization with 120 member states that is not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. Nearly two-thirds of the countries of the UN are also NAM members.
Iran assumed the rotating presidency of NAM for a three-year term in early September.
